Sadly, it means you end up on the merry-go-round between irritability, pain and pill popping. In the long term, if left unresolved and the problem persists there is known risks of bowel cancer.

Sometimes constipation is associated with low mood, anxiety; too stressed out and too busy to go and sit down?

Frequently, not enough drinking water and exercise are heralded as 'contributory factors'.

Why medications are only a short term solution

Laxatives a very useful in an emergency situation - but if you come to depend on drugs them to get relief, then dangerous.
The body is constantly looking maintain balance in the body, and even if you can't "go", the body will find work-around or get you to find the right support.
Some examples include;

releasing toxins through the skin - noticeable if you are feeling itchy,

craving a certain food or drink that will kick start "things", e.g. coffee, alcohol etc.,

doubling over in abdominal pain, acts as a comfort and gentle massage!

Not being hungry anymore reduces the burden in the system.

Back to medications, there is a famous saying that says, when we are poorly, our bodies go through healing. However, when you have drugs, you need to heal twice, once for the root of original problem and again to recover from the effects of putting medication into your system.

So, what is going on inside digestion?

There is a very large nerve that emerges from your brain and travels to most organs in the body including the bowels. It is called the Vagus nerve, also known as the "wanderer". Stress and unexpressed, squashed down emotions affects it. Also, unresolved traumatic experiences affect the tone and functioning of this special cranial nerve. Most of the nerve endings of the vagus nerve end in the tummy. When the nerves don't tell the bowels to push things along.....the production line comes to a halt!

The gut is said to have a brain that sends more messages to our "upstairs" brain than the other way round. Stress can also upset the biodiversity in the gut, leaving not enough of the "good" ones to breakdown the food. Toxic load builds up sending subtle alarm signals to the brain. If the brain receives these incoming signals at the same time as other internal and external stressors , the system goes into an overwhelm......a shut down. And that is not just a metaphor, that shut down can include your bowels, too!

Tensions held in the body from shock and trauma can often interfere with the bloody supply, cell metabolism and presence of the right chemical hormones. Serotonin, a feel good hormone - most if it is produced in the gut!

Our bowels are closely linked to our emotions too. Ever noticed friends and loved ones, holding on to so much, so tight, holding it in, inside.....metaphorically and then... also....quite literally!
They can't go to the toilet (aka "let go")

Why Craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral works in harmony with your mind-body. Here in this blog, I'll expand on what "practitioner intuition" means and what a "sense of safety" might look like within a treatment, and how to identify their genuine compassion and sensitivity to your specific needs.

This blog is relevant to any type of practitioner; medical or complementary, alternative, spiritual, psychic, homeopath, chiropractor, rolfer, acupuncturist, psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, massage therapist, naturopath etc.......etc.......

Over the years, I was overwhelmed by the number of different therapies "out there" - but that is a blog or two for another day!

A decade ago, I was so desperate to get better, so much so that I spent many thousands of pounds of hard earned money that I could not afford. Sadly, I wasted a lot of money and time - had lots of hope dashed. I figured there must be a way of getting to the right therapist quickly and getting the best value for money in terms to real change/healing. I concluded that whilst the right treatment modality was important, I decided that even more important, was finding the right therapist to work with me.

This blog includes my experiences to help you shortcut from the potential dilemma that I encountered.

It suggests a few things to add to your checklist of the things that you may haven't thought about, some fact finding ways to help you find your, perfect-for-you practitioner.

Instinctively, it is really difficult for us to imagine ourselves to go to an unfamiliar centre, or even someone's house and see a relatively new stranger (aka therapist) and lay ourselves down and allow them to gently hold your head - the place where we process our secret and most vulnerable place of shameful thoughts and difficult emotions. How can someone new in our lives possibly 'contain' all of this and make us feel 'held' and supported? They can't hear us, but all the same, still close isn't it?

A skillful and trustworthy practitioner does just this, every time they meet someone new. They also understand intuitively where you are at, allowing them space and time to work out, "Can I stay here?", "Can I relax?" or even "Am I safe?"

Checklist before make contact/booking
1. Are there positive comments made about them, by the people I trust. Are there any genuine feedback submissions by a controlled site (e.g. Google reviews)
2. Have I seen a picture of him or her? Have I seen them speak on a short video or heard them speak. What does my impression of theie voice ad appearance and body language feel like in my body. Also relevant to evaluation checklist, later
3. Do they offer a free, no obligation initial discussion
4. Are they available after the treatment to follow up with me anything that might be unusual.
5. Does the business place look bright, clean and tidy? Does it seem claustrophobic or somewhat exposed? Can I imagine myself becoming more relaxed in that environment?
6. Do they have a website or an Web information page that shows their membership organisation, qualifications and experience?
7. Should anything go wrong, a) do they have insurance b) are the covered by a membership organisation that deals with my complaints?
8. Are they a registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), UK voluntary regulator for the NHS. Find out by putting their name in their directory www.cnhc.org.uk/
9. Are the treatment charges clear and transparent. Can I have a receipt? Can I pay by card?
10. Do the hours they work fit in with the times that I am available to go for a treatment.
11. Is there an option of where I can go for treatment e.g. a nicer or more local treatment centre. Could they possibly come to my home?
11. Do I have any special needs that I need to discuss before I make a booking that might be difficult for the therapist to accommodate ; some examples include;

needing ground floor or very close toilet facilities,

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders

Tourette's syndrome,

Special Couch to support extra large size,

Learning disabilities

Mobility issues and stairs

Evaluating whether to continue with the therapist....

Having decided to try out the therapist, then go with an open, uncommitted mind about whether you would want to have further treatments. Here are a few more things to think about when evaluating your practitioner within the context of the healing experience;
1. At the beginning of the treatment

Was there a waiting area available if I arrived early. If I was running a few minutes late, how did the practitioner approach this?

Was the area made ready for me before I arrived? Was I shown where the toilets were and offered water to drink? Did I feel welcomed?

Was the treatment area comfortable and private.

Was his/her approach a bit "in my face" or too direct? Was way they question me feel too much like a police interrogation or just intrusive into my personal life? Did they come across as an unwanted Agony Aunt telling me what I have to do? Did I sense heir judgement on the information I was sharing? These are tell tale signs of your therapist sensitivity to you

Did she seem vague and dis-organised? Was she paying attention when I was speaking? Did she seem down to earth or "out there" with the fairies? Did they smile at all or cross their arms and feet? Did she have a relaxed open posture or was the "weight-of-the-world' also seemed to be on her shoulders too?

Did she come across too friendly and over-familiar or did it feel like she was too aloof and 'professional' like?

2. During the treatment.....

Did you feel that the pacing of the treatment was right for you - did you feel rushed? Did you feel it wasn't progressing quickly enough?

Were you comfortable with their touch (if applicable) ? Did the therapist intuitively move to an area of discomfort without you needing to say anything - did it feel intrusive or supportive?

Did the session feel as though it end too quickly or did you feel like you couldn't wait for it to end?

Did you relax into receiving their treatment overall or was your skin feeling prickly and feel tense throughout?

Did you feel heard and listened to?

3. Did they observe your time boundaries? This is a mixed area for us as therapists; sometimes, when something comes up for the client towards the end of a session, it is usually better to help bring client to some to place of completion than to leave on time and feeling discombobulated. That said, there is nothing worse than a sense of being lost in a time warp because the treatment over-ran. This is an indication that the therapist might have boundary issues, a) not skilled in time keeping and b) not respecting your time constraints.

At the end of the session.....
4. Did you feel rushed out of the door? Did the money exchange feel a bit "grabby"
5. Was I recommended a course of treatment for my particular difficulties? Sometimes, these invitations to an offer that reduce the overall cost - but only valuable if you are sure that you want to have all of those treatments, and have them with that practitioner!
Watch out for this, especially if it was presented that the course of treatment was a guarantee to a complete symptom free outcome. Your therapist is a small business owner who may have conflicting priorities on your treatment outcomes. Sadly, I have come across unrealistic promises like sales pitching to get repeat business. Does the therapist want the very best for you even that means for them becoming "a victim of their own [healing] success ....and not see you often/ever again?
In short, always, say "I'll think about it" and don't commit to anything unless it feels right.

After the treatment session......
6. Did you have an option to discuss your treatment afterwards, if you wanted to? Did they ask for feedback? - a sure sign of the therapists compassion for you and your treatment outcomes and integrity in which they deliver of their services!

Maybe there are some other things that you have thought of that I haven't thought of - Do share in the comments box below! thanks

I hope this has been useful in helping you find the perfect practitioner for you. The touch allows for a different energy vibration inside the body that acts like a catalyst for the healing process.

The healer's ability to channel Universal energy is enhanced after receiving the teachings and been initiated by their Reiki Master. The Initiation process is similar to tunning the healer into a radio frequency that facilitates the practitioners frequencies for even more effective healing. There is no academic training.

Hands are lightly * placed in various positions on the top of a fully clothed body. The positions flow from head towards the feet. Half way through the treatment, the client is asked to turn over and faces downwards, and treatment hand positions follow down the body.

The Reiki Healer does not draw on any palpation (energy, tone, tension, motion patterns in the body) skills, they may or may not have.

The Reiki Healer trusts that the Reiki energy is intelligent and will provide mind, body and spirit with exactly what the client needs for that moment in time.

The body helps to communicate with the healer when it is time to move on to the next position. Treatments are completed within the hour.

The Reiki Healer may draw SACRED symbols in the air to bring an extra healing dimension to the treatment - according to clients needs.

Sometimes clients report that they do NOT feel any sensations of reiki energy. Perceptual skills are so variable, even within the same individual over time. Even if you can't perceive much, be confident that healing energy within the body is working. The Universal healing energy affects the mind, body and spirit.

In Reiki your body will receive ONLY as much energy as your mind and body is able to handle. We think we might like to receive a "one-time-miracle-cure" for a chronic problem, and Reiki is powerful enough to do this, however, the mind and body adjusts the receiving and integration according to what feels safe for the client, so as not to overwhelm them. Alot of power and huge abrupt changes are difficult to integrate!

In Reiki you are protected from any 'misqualified' energies that might reside in your Reiki Healer. Even in the unlikely event that they are holding some 'baggage' or some negative emotional state, this cannot be passed on, into the client by touch, only the Reiki Universal energy passes.

* There are various lineages of Reiki, and some are hands off the body mode. Check with your Practitioner, and ask for the mode you prefer!

Principles of Craniosacral Therapy

Unlike the Reiki Healer who completes a short course and initiation process, the qualified Craniosacral therapist will have undertaken a minimum of 100 hours of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology study followed by a two year's vocational training. Following qualification, Craniosacral therapists continue to adhere to the ethics and integrity of the membership association (CSTA) and obtain full professional insurance for working with the public. There is no requirement to be affiliated to any Reiki Association or their guidelines. Craniosacral therapists undertake continuous professional development and are encouraged to receive regular supervision. Craniosacral therapists undertake a case history with new clients to help them understand; patterns and history of symptoms, early experience that impact on health and information that would indicate treatment adjustments for safety.

Resonance and the relationship between Craniosacral therapist and client are powerful territories which are necessary prerequisites for treatment outcomes.

Depending on the training of the practitioner** they may invite a discussion with the client about their resource and positive 'felt sensory tones' in the body. During the treatments, this resource may be referred to again if something arises that has the potential for making the client feel re-traumatised by a memory. Resources is like an internalised sense of safety and is so important for the client when working with trauma and is vital for bringing about a healing resolution rather than "re-doing" the trauma itself!

Beginning at the side of the table, the practitioner draws on mindfulness presence for their clients to help them settle - it creates a field of safety. This is followed by initial contact at the feet, a gentle way to help the client's system to deepen and settle further. The client's system shifts out of vigilance, stress and fragmentated states into a deep relaxed state. The Practitioner always orientates to the health of the mind-body system.

Unlike Reiki, the Practitioner invites dialogue about what is being felt in the body. The client is encourage to share, in real PRESENT time, sensations, thoughts, feelings, memories, visuals, colours etc., this not only allows for the resolution of 'conditional forces' that has happened, it also integrates the process between mind, body and spirit. In Reiki, the client chooses if and when to share and the Practitioner follows their lead.

Contact holds are generally made from the underside of the body (unlike reiki which is from top), especially so in various places along the spine and the sides of the head. The client never lies face downwards on the couch. However, the client may be invited onto their side for a combined sacral/occipital hold. This is very integrative and very feels very supportive.

Craniosacral therapists 'listen' to the body and what it wants to be acknowledged; and often will guide the practitioner on areas to be in contact with. Unlike Reiki, there is no protocol to be followed for complete set of contact 'holds', nor is there a time limit placed on a specific hold. It could be that the whole session could be from, say, Sacral hold, as this was what was needed! The body's Intelligence (yes, I did mean it with a capital I) decides which order to resolve these 'issues' held in the body. Think of a knotted ball of wool, the Intelligence knows which 'knot' to deal with, and knows which order move through to get to the ones in the centre without knitting up more 'knots' in the process..!

Craniosacral therapists are guided by the body's Intelligence to the area of tissue densification, of stuck energy in the body. When in more local contact, the Practitioner, uses very subtle augmentation skills to help bring things into balance, allowing the area to release the source of the problem. The stuck energy is freed in the body, increasing vitality. Sometimes, there may be an emotional trauma linked to this 'densification'. Should this arise, the practitioners uses specialised verbal skills, and the client is reminded of their resources to help transform their history and their body's emotional expression of that, towards a safe and calm resolution. The freed energy is further integrated and there is a sense of more coherence and wholeness of the person.

Highly traumatised clients who can't access their good felt sense of 'resources' in their body or life support easily - or easily become disconnected from their own bodies e.g numbness, spaced out, not "here", may initially have slow progress towards physical healing until sufficient resources available to keep the body safe from re-traumatisiation. As healing occurs over time, more and more resources become available to leverage further and deeper healing.

** Please see a blog coming soon comparing Cranio Osteopathy, Biomechanical and Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy. In short, at one extreme, the Upledger trained therapists are more about locating distortions and making mine-ute adjustment to fix it and at the other end of the spectrum Biodynamic, hold the space and listens - with present time awareness this allows the body and primary respiration to do the work. Biodynamic trained practitioners work through resources with the client.

Summing it all up then......

If you are a very private person, and just wish to "experience" healing, then Reiki might be the better option for you. If want to explore collaboratively your body felt senses with your therapist, then maybe Craniosacral Therapy might be better option for you.

If you feel safer with academically qualified practitioners, then Craniosacral therapy might be a better option.

If you like predictability and familiarity with the treatment format, then the Reiki treatment will be a more comfortable experience.

Common to both modalities of treatment, you can expect to leave feeling relaxed. Sometimes, clients report that they know something has happened but can't quite find the words to describe it. Words I often hear are ; 'balanced", "centred", "free", "opened", "relaxed", "energised" etc., Also, they may see colours, dreamlike images.

Often they return reporting that also other aspects of their lives and personal relationships follow that similar ease. . In addition to the above, those who receive Craniosacral add comments like, "Everything went so very still" and "it was like I was moving along the slow waves" or "there was no longer my body just like being in space"

When it comes to healing, practitioner intuition and their providing you with a sense of safety could be more important than technical-know-how or any number of certificate of "merits" on their wall.

Two Ingredients that are essential to treatment outcomes are ; a) the compassion and b) sensitivity of your therapist, to your specific needs. Please see my next blog "How to Chose a good Practitioner? "

Healing is not a miracle but a powerful everyday occurrence available for everyone, whoever you are or wherever you are starting at!

So I hope this blog has helped you compare and contrast the two different types of treatments I offer in Warwickshire UK.
